Educator

Alex is known as one of a rare breed of educators equally at home working with beginners and with musicians at the highest level. Today his work spans individual teaching, chamber music, orchestral coaching, conducting, teacher development and educational leadership, working with musicians from young beginners to conservatoire students, professional performers and adult learners.

With the Benedetti Foundation, Alex has worked with thousands of musicians and teachers across the UK and internationally. He coaches players of all ages and stages, leads courses for teachers, conducts orchestras and works with musicians who share a common desire to deepen their understanding of music and performance. This breadth of experience has led many to describe him as one of a rare breed of educators who can inspire musicians from the very beginning of their musical lives through to professional level.

As Director of Music and Expressive Arts and a member of the Senior Management Team at Wells Cathedral School, Alex leads one of the UK’s specialist music schools. Alongside his strategic leadership responsibilities, Alex continues to teach, coach and conduct regularly. He teaches violin, coaches chamber music and conducts the school’s orchestras, ensuring that his leadership remains firmly rooted in day to day musical practice.

Alex’s pupils have gone on to become members of the National Children’s and National Youth Orchestras of Great Britain, winners of national and international competitions, finalists in BBC Young Musician and full scholarship holders at leading conservatoires. Chamber groups he has coached have enjoyed repeated success at Pro Corda and other national competitions.

Alongside his work in schools and with the Benedetti Foundation, Alex is a regular adjudicator, writer and presenter. These complementary roles continue to shape his teaching, bringing together performance, communication and leadership in ways that benefit musicians at every stage of their development.
